Further research is needed to establish a clearer understanding of this phenomenon. There’s growing evidence that it may be a unique symptom of long COVID, particularly the post-viral fatigue syndrome (PVFS) type. I drank before I got sick (not an absurd amount) and have never really had problems with alcohol.
He received four doses of COVID-19 vaccination, two before and two after infection. Alcohol reactions and sensitivity are not well characterized in the literature as it relates to post-viral illness. Symptoms were also disruptive to regular daily activities.
For example, consider having a small gathering at home instead of going to a crowded bar or club. Try to keep your home as well-ventilated as possible, and encourage your guests to stay home if they’re feeling unwell. Going “cold turkey” when you have a physical dependence on alcohol can be dangerous. Detoxing from alcohol needs to be done under medical supervision. Alcohol consumption may make your symptoms worse, according to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism alcohol intolerance after covid (NIAAA).
This patient received four doses of COVID-19 vaccination, three administered prior to her COVID infection and one post COVID infection. Notably, this patient also met the diagnostic criteria for ME/CFS. While the COVID-19 pandemic is no longer in the crisis stage globally, many people—including some wine lovers—continue to feel its effects.
Long COVID, also known as post-COVID conditions, occurs when health problems last for weeks, months or even years after a coronavirus infection. It was recognized by the American With Disabilities Act in 2021 and roughly 30% of adults may experience at least one COVID symptom that lasts three months or more, according to research. Although the underlying mechanisms aren’t fully understood, the symptom may be linked to the broader condition of long COVID and share similarities with conditions like myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS).
Cytokines are particularly nasty players in the lung damage seen in severe cases. You may have heard the term “cytokine storm” more than once over the last year of this pandemic. My uneducated understanding is that cytokines are mediators released by white blood cells. I think it’s safe to say that they share some similarities with histamines in their mediating function, but I will leave the specifics to the professionals. I know for sure that accumulation of cytokines has been implicated in some of the worst COVID symptoms.
She also reported worsening anxiety and depression in addition to myalgias and arthralgias with numbness in her hands and feet. Prior to the patient’s acute COVID infection, she drank socially without issue, but post-COVID infection, similar amounts of alcohol results in symptoms of flushing and headache. The patient had three doses of COVID-19 vaccine after her initial COVID infection.
As a diuretic, alcohol may amplify dehydration in OI patients, further diminishing blood flow to the brain when upright and intensifying symptoms 26. Alcohol sensitivity has been observed in a patient with PASC in a case report 20 but has not been widely studied. Here, we present a case series of patients reporting alcohol sensitivity following a SARS-CoV-2 infection that were evaluated at the Post-Acute COVID-19 Syndrome (PACS) Clinic at Stanford University. Patients had a history of confirmed COVID-19 infection and persistent post-COVID symptoms that lasted longer than four weeks. Patients 1, 2, and 4’s PASC symptoms persisted since their acute infection, while Patient 3’s PASC symptoms became noticeable two months after their initial COVID-19 infection.
“Not one I’ve seen said they felt worse after getting the COVID vaccine. There had been a concern that by getting the vaccine, their symptoms might get worse, but we haven’t seen it,” Sandrock said. It’s also possible to be allergic to proteins in filling agents, such as egg or shellfish, which manufacturers sometimes use to remove fine particles from alcoholic beverages. Post-viral fatigue (PVF) is fatigue that first starts during a viral infection but persists after the virus has gone. Scientists are not sure what causes PVF, though immune cells called cytokines likely play a role. The study author did caution that causation can’t be inferred directly from this observational study.
Prior to her initial COVID infection, she had no issues with alcohol tolerance and could easily tolerate about seven mixed drinks containing hard liquor in one night. A standard drink contains 14 grams of pure alcohol, with one standard drink equivalents including 5 ounces of wine or 12 ounces of beer 21. After COVID infection, however, she reported feeling like she suffers from “alcohol poisoning” after drinking even small amounts of alcohol and feels “terrible” for several days after consumption. Her tolerance has decreased to the point where one beer would result in a severe “hangover,” along with exacerbation of PASC symptoms for three days thereafter. She received one dose of the vaccine before COVID infection.
Mast cells in the surrounding area release histamine which makes it possible for lots of white blood cells and plasma to enter the affected area, causing the swelling symptoms. I always enjoyed wine and beer seltzers prior to Covid, but now they make me sick. After feeling better, every time I drink, I wake up the next day with nasal congestion, anxiety and fogginess, no matter how little I drink. I had Covid in November (2020) and now drinking is… different. I have way less tolerance and I don’t feel well as soon as I start.
